AUCKLAND UNI: ORIENTATION ON FORM

Orientation on Thursday evening was without the riff-raff I recall of my formative years at University. Often referred to as O-Week, students are given the opportunity to let loose and get to know each other, enjoy a few beverages at a gig or in some cases, orient their maps and backpacks to the right lecture theatre. The choice is yours.

TOP GIRLS

TOP GIRLS

Feminism is dead. When women can vote, work, have sex and enjoy it too – what else is there to fight for?

If there weren’t a convincing response to that argument, then 30 years ago Caryl Churchill might never have sat down to write Top Girls, now a classic of post-modern theatre and currently showing under Shane Bosher’s direction at the...

WOMAD: QUICKFIRE Q's WITH ASH GRUNWALD

EntertainMe caught up with Blue and Roots artist Ash Grunwald on sharks, the Melbourne music scene and his plans for 2012.

For those that are unfamiliar with your sound, describe it in five words...

Modern blues, beats, Gospel Soul with the odd acoustic song in there..... sorry that's more than five.

What does Blues music mean to you?

It's the most soulful genre that I've ever found. Currently I'm experimenting...

NEW PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL: PROVIDENCE

Leaving the comforts of home, I usher myself along to Providence, showing as part of the New Performance Festival held at Auckland’s Civic Centre. In one sentence, it’s a hearty live action story-tale which leaves no oblique aspect of ‘homeless’ un-addressed.

Providence is not new to the stage. Released in 2010, it showed successfully at Auckland’s the Basement theatre before being plucked out by festival curator Stephen Bain to participate in...

NEW PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL: SHOWPONY

Upon descending the stairs of the Aotea Centre and approaching the wee performance space of Showpony to a synthesised keyboard solo by a red ‘onesy’ clad Nisha Madhan, one could already sense that we were on a cusp of an intrepid journey into the avant garde. We were not disappointed.

A series of vignettes proceeded with two female performers (Alexa Wilson and Nisha Madhan) sending up all natures that coagulate with...

EXPLORING SPLORE: PART 2

Triple A at Splore : the Art, the Artist and the Audience.

Never mind the damp tent, the squashed bananas for breakfast or last night’s downpour. It was time to open the can of Splore-beans and taste test the art on offer.

Black and white face paint and a bow-tie to boot, he jumped out from behind a Pohutukawa tree to wave at the bemused on-lookers, “Welcome to the Fluxus Funhouse!” he called. Nearby a dressed-up Giraffe was peering through a Kaleidoscope. How normal.

QUICKFIRE Q'S WITH MIKE FABULOUS FROM THE BLACK SEEDS

EntertainMe caught up with long time favourites The Black Seeds. Catch them live at WOMAD 2012 on 16-18 March.

Firstly, it’s very exciting news to hear you will be releasing an album in April! What should we expect from Dust and Dirt?

Yes it is! You can expect some new sounds from us - we had our own studio for this album and got to experiment and take our time with the recording process, which is luxury for musicians. It's an album that...
