QUICKFIRE Q's WITH DAVID KELLEY OF 2AM ORCHESTRA

EntertainMe fired through a few q’s to David Kelley of 2am Orchestra - they’ve done a fair few roadies round the States and are working on their third album at present. See them live and supporting Xavier Rudd this Friday at the Kings Arms.

In light of Easter over the weekend... what came first, the chicken or the egg?

The chicken.

Are you an introvert or extrovert, and how does this impact you as a performer and musician?

Introvert - I often prefer silence to company. I’m most creative when in isolation. However, once inspired I find myself desperate to share ideas with others because if I don’t, it‘s as if those ideas and feelings aren‘t real.

Describe the band’s sound in five words.

Hmm.. How would Don Draper sell us…? Engaging. Dynamic. Ever-changing. Vulnerable. Fun.

Tell us about one gig that has been particularly memorable.

We played at a bar mitzvah once. We didn’t learn “Hava Nagila” properly, so after a few dodgy attempts, the percussionist just started rapping the lyrics to “One Week” by the Barenaked Ladies (which was popular at the time). Luckily, the kid thought it was great, even if his grandparents thought we were the devil.

What happens when you play music at 2am?

The neighbours tell you to shut up.

What is one song you’ve had on repeat lately?

“Darkwave Surfer” by Aural Vampire.

What are the plans for 2 a.m. Orchestra and you as a solo artist for 2012?

Finishing up an album at the moment; this will be the third full-length release. Gotta wrap that up. I quite like playing solo. It’s rewarding in a different way. So yeah, more of that this year.

Write one line from a song you have written that we should all know...

“Life is easy, living is simple: just do right by folks and try not to lie”

By Olivia Young
