Where did the inspiration behind Jambalaya start?
It started in 2003 with a group of friends who loved dancing. Heidi Hughes (Creative Director) had gotten into the Latin music and dance scene, but wanted to create even more opportunities for dancing and meeting other like-minded people. It was a natural response from all the communities who wanted the same thing as her.
How did you get involved in this production?
I started as a festival participant and slowly became more and more involved. My passion for the festival showed and with my previous skills and experience I was recruited as Festival Director. The Jambalaya Trust wanted someone young and enthusiastic who understood what Jambalaya was about - that was me!
How has it challenged you?
Being a volunteer-run organisation it can be challenging getting everything done around other people's work hours. Meetings are often at night or on weekends, so for the last few months I have put my personal life on hold. Our volunteers are amazing and give so much to the festival - we just couldn't do it without them!
What can people expect from Jambalaya?
Picture this... Wake up in your tent in the leafy Corban Estate Arts Centre. Start the day with a morning yoga class and a delicious mango smoothie. Spend the rest of the day trying out the most amazing music and dance workshops with the very best local and international teachers. From Swing to Reggae, Acapella to Ukulele. In the evening watch one of the dance shows while sampling beautiful international cuisine. Explore the illuminated art trail, sip chai in a Moroccan tent and then head to one of the themed onsite parties. You’ll finish off the day dancing in the cellar bar with DJs spinning tunes into the wee hours.
What sets aside Jambalaya from other festivals?
In all my years of visiting festivals all over the world I am yet to find anything like Jambalaya. It is the most amazing magical festival I have ever been to. The participatory aspect of the workshops is what really sets it apart. Not only do you leave having had so much fun, but you have acquired new skills and many friendships have been forged.
