GEORGE FM DJ IWAN MIXES THE UMAMI FLAVOUR

Music nerd Ian Wan aka iWan is an Auckland based DJ who took out the George FM mix factor competition last year and hosts a weekly radio show on George FM, Umami Radio every Saturday 10-Midnight. Catch him this Thursday at the Easter Weekender at The Studio, K Rd.

How did you get into DJing?

I got into DJing about 2-3 years ago after the Rock/Metal band I was drumming for disbanded (heh). Around that time I was just getting into the dance scene and a friend of mine who goes by the alias Captain Morgan had bought his first pair of decks and over a few drinks at his I had a go and was hooked. Being a drummer gave me good a understanding of song structures and phrasing, so I picked it up fairly easily.

Describe your style and what you like playing

I place a very important emphasis on melody and flow - a trait that developed from when I used to mix Trance when I started out. Style wise it’s usually energetic, jump-uppy and upbeat music. In terms of what I play, it’s mainly Drum and Bass and Dubstep these days with a bit of Moombaton and Electro thrown in for good measure.

Where does the name UMAMI come from?

Funny question that! The word is actually a Japanese phrase for the 5th flavour or better known as the ‘yummy’ or savory flavour that you just can’t describe. So in relation to music, it’s the same for me when I hear a song I absolutely love but can’t quite describe it. That’s the kind of ethos of how I want people to see the music I push - almost like an aural Umami. Also the fact that I’m Asian (Chinese Malaysian to be specific) was another reason to go with that name.

How has George FM influenced your style?

As a listener, I used to actually hate dance music and hip hop. I didn’t think they were a credible form of music. Back then it was a strict diet of progressive metal, jazz and heavy rock. Since listening to George, I’ve been a lot more open to new styles of music for playing out and listening. I guess I’ve become less of a hater and genre basher.

As a DJ, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for George and am fully thankful and grateful for it. After taking out their first Mix Factor Competition, many opportunities have come about since. Having a solid platform to promote and align yourself with is key to getting around in this day and age, as it’s no secret that the scene has been fairly saturated these days

Who are main influencers in the industry for you?

I always tell people that Dan Aux was the reason why I’m on George FM. I guested on his show a while back when I was still a bedroom DJ. Aside from that, Rich Carey gets a notable mention for sorting me out one of my first and biggest sets I’ve ever played. And lastly, a good friend of mine Rowan Smith - aka Audiosmith - is responsible for converting me over to playing DnB and Dubstep.

What should we expect at the Easter weekender this week?

Carnage, dislocated limbs, zombies and debauchery! In all seriousness though, it should be a killer night with huge bass heavy vibes. I’m privileged enough to be on the supporting lineup. I can’t wait to meet the people behind the music I play, as that’s the ultimate reward for most people in the scene. Looking forward to Zomboy, Skism, TC, Roksonix and the Queen of DnB Jenna G! She’s got a phenomenal voice. Also good chance to catch up with fellow kiwi MC Tali.

What is the ultimate goal in terms of your DJ career?

For the music I play to be appreciated by people all around the world and hopefully to make a living doing what I love doing.

What are your plans for 2012?

Been dabbling in a bit of production lately as I needed a new challenge after DJing and I have always wanted to get back into making my own music since my band days. I’ve recently whipped up a track with a good friend of mine Chris Scott aka Art Heist and hopefully there’s more of that to come!
