Describe your style and what you like playing
I place a very important emphasis on melody and flow - a trait that developed from when I used to mix Trance when I started out. Style wise it’s usually energetic, jump-uppy and upbeat music. In terms of what I play, it’s mainly Drum and Bass and Dubstep these days with a bit of Moombaton and Electro thrown in for good measure.
Where does the name UMAMI come from?
Funny question that! The word is actually a Japanese phrase for the 5th flavour or better known as the ‘yummy’ or savory flavour that you just can’t describe. So in relation to music, it’s the same for me when I hear a song I absolutely love but can’t quite describe it. That’s the kind of ethos of how I want people to see the music I push - almost like an aural Umami. Also the fact that I’m Asian (Chinese Malaysian to be specific) was another reason to go with that name.
How has George FM influenced your style?
As a listener, I used to actually hate dance music and hip hop. I didn’t think they were a credible form of music. Back then it was a strict diet of progressive metal, jazz and heavy rock. Since listening to George, I’ve been a lot more open to new styles of music for playing out and listening. I guess I’ve become less of a hater and genre basher.
As a DJ, I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for George and am fully thankful and grateful for it. After taking out their first Mix Factor Competition, many opportunities have come about since. Having a solid platform to promote and align yourself with is key to getting around in this day and age, as it’s no secret that the scene has been fairly saturated these days
Who are main influencers in the industry for you?
I always tell people that Dan Aux was the reason why I’m on George FM. I guested on his show a while back when I was still a bedroom DJ. Aside from that, Rich Carey gets a notable mention for sorting me out one of my first and biggest sets I’ve ever played. And lastly, a good friend of mine Rowan Smith - aka Audiosmith - is responsible for converting me over to playing DnB and Dubstep.
