WOMAD: QUICKFIRE Q's WITH ADAM PAGE

Adam Page is known for his quality beard and musical talents. EntertainMe got the latest from him, in the countdown for his performance at WOMAD 2012.

What magic do you like to make in the music industry? Describe your sound to those unfamiliar.

I like to create the truest version of my musical self on stage. Improvising most of my set enables me to do this and also interact with the audience. Being inspired by my surroundings, be it a club, festival, theatre or house concert is invaluable to the way the show progresses and grows. I am so lucky to be able to create a truly organic approach to music making, through the help of my on-the-spot recording capabilities of looping pedals, which I feel is completely magical!!

How did you get involved in the music industry?

Through necessity. Looking back when I was younger there wasn't a moment I wasn't playing something or at least thinking about music. It was a natural progression for me to be in this industry, but there were certainly some defining moments like seeing and hearing Perth saxophonist Jamie Oehlers play, when I was 15. He was only 18 at the time and BLEW ME AWAY. That was the moment I knew I was going to be doing this for the rest of my life.

What was a memorable gig for 2011?

Definitely WOMADelaide. I am from Adelaide, so to play to my home crowd was spectacular. It really was a gig I'll never forget.

What are some challenges of being a musician in New Zealand?

For me it's been a bit of a challenge just getting my name out there. I moved here from Australia 6 months ago, but spent a good 6 months before that spending countless hours emailing hundreds of people 'sprucing' my show. I am starting to establish myself in the Wellington scene, due to the utterly delightful positive, supportive vibe amongst the Wellington musicians. In many ways their open arms have made it quite easy for me actually!!!

Who are you listening to on your headphones?

I prefer listening to my vinyl collection because MP3's sound so naff!! But, I am really loving my Donny Hathaway 'LIVE' record. Such a classic. Also Ornette Coleman 'The Shape of Jazz to Come', James Brown 'Live at The Apollo', Fabulous Arabia 'Unlimited Buffet', Tom Waits 'Nightwawks at The Diner'.... mate, the list is endless!!! /p>

Who would you like to collaborate with in 2012?

What I'd REALLY love to do is get all my old Aussie muso mates and all my new Kiwi muso mates into a big room somewhere with instruments and a stack of beers and have the world's most almighty hang and create a Trans-Tasman festival. I don't think there is enough cross pollination musically between the 2 countries. It's silly really as we are so close to one another and have so much to share. Leave it with me. I have ideas!!

I hear you have been working with Riki Gooch on various projects, how has this influenced your style?

Well his positivity and kind nature alone is inspiration enough before we even start on the music side of things. Damn, he's a nice fella! But musically he has been a massive influence and a driving force in me wanting to live in NZ. He just has an ear for it, and has a special way of adding that special sparkle to any collaboration. His heart and soul is into everything he's involved with which is so refreshing and inspiring. I hope he reads this... I just blew a whole lotta air up his bum.

When should we expect to see your next release?

Well, hopefully 'Band of Thousands' (the duo with Riki) will have a CD at WOMAD. We are working on it currently... so hopefully we'll have something. But in April I am recording a piece written by myself and Kiwi composer John Psathas called The Harvest Suite. That will be out through Rattle Records in the months following.

We are looking forward to catching you down at WOMAD in March, what should we expect from your performance?

The Solo slot will be a mixture of dozens of styles on stacks of instruments, inspired by the sounds of WOMAD... there will also be a fair bit of silliness, and if you're lucky I may even play my Beard! The 'Band of Thousands' set will see myself and Riki Gooch creating huge, lush tunes with me on my loop pedals and instruments and Riki on drums and sampler. It is going to be GREAT!!!

Lastly, what’s your best party trick?

Really, you don't want to know!
