I like to create the truest version of my musical self on stage. Improvising most of my set enables me to do this and also interact with the audience. Being inspired by my surroundings, be it a club, festival, theatre or house concert is invaluable to the way the show progresses and grows. I am so lucky to be able to create a truly organic approach to music making, through the help of my on-the-spot recording capabilities of looping pedals, which I feel is completely magical!!
How did you get involved in the music industry?
Through necessity. Looking back when I was younger there wasn't a moment I wasn't playing something or at least thinking about music. It was a natural progression for me to be in this industry, but there were certainly some defining moments like seeing and hearing Perth saxophonist Jamie Oehlers play, when I was 15. He was only 18 at the time and BLEW ME AWAY. That was the moment I knew I was going to be doing this for the rest of my life.
What was a memorable gig for 2011?
Definitely WOMADelaide. I am from Adelaide, so to play to my home crowd was spectacular. It really was a gig I'll never forget.
What are some challenges of being a musician in New Zealand?
For me it's been a bit of a challenge just getting my name out there. I moved here from Australia 6 months ago, but spent a good 6 months before that spending countless hours emailing hundreds of people 'sprucing' my show. I am starting to establish myself in the Wellington scene, due to the utterly delightful positive, supportive vibe amongst the Wellington musicians. In many ways their open arms have made it quite easy for me actually!!!
Who are you listening to on your headphones?
I prefer listening to my vinyl collection because MP3's sound so naff!! But, I am really loving my Donny Hathaway 'LIVE' record. Such a classic. Also Ornette Coleman 'The Shape of Jazz to Come', James Brown 'Live at The Apollo', Fabulous Arabia 'Unlimited Buffet', Tom Waits 'Nightwawks at The Diner'.... mate, the list is endless!!! /p>
