WHISKEY LIVE SERIES 2012: GIN WIGMORE, MUSIC RUNS THROUGH HER VEINS

WHISKEY LIVE SERIES 2012: GIN WIGMORE, MUSIC RUNS THROUGH HER VEINS

Thanks to New Zealand Music Month, these past few weeks Auckland has seen the best in local music talent come out to play at The Whiskey in Ponsonby. It all came to an end on Saturday and boy did they save the best for last.

There’s something truly magical about Gin Wigmore. From the moment she gets on stage, you can’t help but fall under her spell. Her stage presence is just electric and her energy contagious.

Her “grunge rocker” look and charm draw you in immediately but it is her free spirit and captivating sound that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Watching her live is exhilarating.

To the uninitiated, her music is mostly a mix of pop rock and folk rock but you also get some Americana and even a hint of honky-tonk. The latter is a great twist and so refreshing to the ear. You don’t need to be a fan or be familiar with her music to enjoy it and have a flipping good time.

In the music business there are singers and then there are artists. Gin Wigmore exudes artistry. From her signature raspy voice to her quirky musical sensibilities and lyrical prowess, she is anything but cookie cutter. She is her own unique brand and that’s the most appealing thing about her.

I have always been drawn to singer-songwriters because of the unique perspective they have of the world around them; life is seen through a musical lens. The stories they tell through song are always so personal yet have universal meaning. This definitely rings true with Gin’s music catalogue.

From the heartfelt words of These Roses, which took shape following a failed relationship with an accountant to Black Sheep, the upbeat anthem that celebrates being different, her songs are packed full of attitude and catchy hooks that all come together in a thumping good sound. Her upbeat and energetic performances of early hits Under My Skin and Oh My were also standouts for me.

Gin Wigmore is truly a unique, incredible talent and a force to be reckoned with. Music runs through her very veins and all she wants is to share it with anyone that will listen. So listen.
