A SNIPPET ON BRICK BAY SCULPTURE TRAIL

A snippet on Brick Bay Sculpture Trail

Brick Bay near Matakana has a fine balance of the subtle and the substantial.

The experience lies between the architecture of the natural and the man-made.  Native bush and sculpture co-exist at Brick Bay Sculpture Park, as this privately owned space exhibits around 45 contemporary New Zealand made sculptures.

Trails weave around lily-lined lakes, transforming this north-Auckland land into a creative space for discovery, educating the young and old.

For a mere $12 and just 60 minutes north of Auckland, this park offers a selection of ever-changing top calibre artists including Graham Bennett, Gretchen Albrecht, Paul Dibble and Fatu Feu’u.

The definition of art is questioned, as Konstantin Dimopoulos pushes boundaries with his blue painted native Manuka trees. Highlighting nation-wide issues of deforestation and the importance of sustainability, the work lets nature take its course as the biodegradable paint disintegrates.

Through the blue trees, Jeff Thomson’s corrugated iron ‘curls’ float amongst the lilies on the lake; the colours work harmoniously together catching ones eye on the way up the hill.

Moving on, Greer Twiss’ rusting albatrosses tumble down the grass – a fine example of how sculpture integrates well with landscape. Regan Gentry is a clever creative and clearly evident in his comical combination with music meets transport in Double Bass Boat. Sculpture has a tendency to incorporate people, place and identity and this selection is no exception.

Brick Bay Sculpture Park offers a day’s exploration for all, be it curious or passionate, this piece of paradise is worth your while.
